Criticality of Media Literacy

Criticality of Media Literacy

The past few years have demonstrated just how critical and essential media literacy is and why it is a practice that we all need to engage in now more than ever. No matter who you are or what you believe, questioning and validating the information you consume is healthy and appropriate.

Between social media, podcasts, 24-hour news networks, etc., we’re surrounded by information, but not all of it is true or trustworthy. Knowing how to evaluate sources, question motives, and spot misinformation is a skill we all need to navigate our world responsibly.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Read beyond the headline.
  • Check the source. Who benefits from the message? Where may there be bias?
  • Cross-check information with reliable and diverse outlets.
  • Verify the context of quotes or referenced studies.
  • Slow down before you share.

And be cautious: conspiracy theories and misinformation thrive on fear and false connections. Don’t get pulled in by what “feels” right.

Look for what’s actually supported by evidence and ask yourself: Who does this story serve? What’s the evidence? And most importantly, what happens if we don’t question what we consume?
