Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in a Nutshell
Diverse perspectives lead to smarter, more creative solutions.
A lot of conflicting information is going around about what diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) really means. Understandably, this can make it difficult to see the purpose and value DEI has in our world.
The words "diversity," "equity," and "inclusion" often get politicized, but at their core, they are about creating opportunities for everyone to succeed, no matter who you are.
- Diversity is embracing our differences and the advantages they bring, such as veterans transitioning to civilian jobs, teenagers volunteering in senior living communities, or a person with disabilities contributing in ways that are not always visible.
- Equity focuses on fairness, like ensuring older workers are not overlooked, that our rural communities have access to necessary resources, or that small businesses can compete alongside bigger corporations.
- Inclusion is creating space where people feel like they belong, whether it’s someone new to your team or a kid in school who does not quite fit the mold.
Why It Matters
When we make space for everyone, we all win. Diverse perspectives lead to smarter, more creative solutions. As we remove barriers, we unlock untapped talent and innovation. And when people feel included, our schools, workplaces, and communities become places where everyone thrives.
But here’s the flip side. Without programs that promote DEI, we risk creating systems where a lot of folks are left behind. Whether that’s single parents struggling to access childcare, older workers trying to re-enter the job market, or small towns being overlooked for funding.
DEI isn’t about playing favorites or dividing people. It’s about making sure no one misses out on opportunities to succeed. And that benefits every single one of us.
